At only 6Km (as the crow flies), Prasat Muang Tam is almost a sister site to Phanom Rung.

It is primarily in the Khleang and Baphuon styles, which dates its primary phases of construction to the late 10th and early 11th centuries. The primary deity was Shiva, although Vishnu was also worshipped there. (From Wikipedia)

One of the biggest Khmer cities outside of modern day Cambodia Phanom Rung is a must see.

Prasat Phanom Rung is located on top of an extinct volcano. The sanctuary is situated in Chalerm Phrakiat district of Buriram. It possibly is the most popular Khmer ancient monument in Thailand.

Prasat Phanom Rung is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Phanom Hill and the sanctuary on top are symbols of the mountain Kailasa. Phanom Rung was built between the 10th and 13th centuries A.D.

Inscriptions in the area indicate that Phanom Rung was created by Narendraditya, a descendant of the Mahidharapura dynasty related to King Suryavarman II, the creator of Angkor Wat.

Major restoration at Phanom Rung was carried out between 1971 and 1988 by the Fine Arts Department. (from http://www.thaiwebsites.com/phanomrung.asp)

North of Nakhon Phanom, a small site on the left. Easily missed, but worth a stop. It looks like the footprints were uncovered during road construction and luckily someone recognised their worth. (But I could be wrong)

A very friendly and quite extensive museum of natural history seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

Well worth the visit though. The staff went out of their way to be helpful during our visit.

The signposting indicates a Fossil wood Museum. And although Fossil wood features heavily in the displays, there is much more to see.

Dating from the Neolithic period, it is thought that it is one of the sites defining the origin of the Bronze Age. The site was discovered in 1966 and has recently been developed, with a new museum building containing artefacts discovered in the area. The original excavation is a few hundred metres away in the grounds of the Wat.

Not far from the Sri Thep historical park a Dvaravati era pyramid. This is quite unique. Excavations are continuing in the surrounding area, it is likely a much larger site than is obvious. Most surprising is that it was only discovered relatively recently (~40 years or so)
